A View and Contention:
"Nise Kagaku"
-- Spreading Fake Science in Japan --
Have you ever heard of "Nise Kagaku" 1) (Fake Science) ?

That is something looks like science but is really not science at all; It is also called "False Science" or "Pseudo Science".

You might think "What the hell is it?", but if I name, for example, "Blood Type Personality Telling" 2), "Minus Ion" 3), or "Germanium Bracelet" 4), etc. you might figure out what I am talking about. Or, are you surprised ?
As you know very well, for example, everyone said "The minus ions are good for health", and many manufacturers, including all the major ones, rushed to sell their products with the "Minus Ions" in Japan. Of course, people bought them because they believed that good effects on health of the "Minus Ion" had been scientifically proven. This was only natural when the "Minus Ion" products were abundant and on TV programs and magazine articles quite frequently.
However, it is quite safe to say that there is virtually no scientific evidence that shows the minus ions are good for health. Quite a fuss for nothing! It is worth studying how and why even leading manufacturers have jumped on the empty bandwagon.
Now, germanium products are getting popular. But, in fact, you can expect no more effect than that of an amulet if you wear a germanium bracelet.
There are flourishing various types of Nise Kagaku, which look like science but really anything but science.
Out of those Nise Kagaku, I like to talk about ones that are related to disciplines and/or morals.
One of the well-known examples is so called "Game Brain" theory, which claims that excessive play of video games damages brain functions. But, there are no scientifically reliable evidences to this theory. In this sense, this is another example of Nise Kagaku.
It should be true that a playing game could have some impact on shaping children's character because a video game is a game with a story, but that is also true for every novel or TV drama. Whether the brain functions could be damaged or not is completely another story.
Surprisingly, this theory is widely accepted among educational circles. It seems that many lectures on this subject are being held all over the country, sponsored by school boards and/or PTA.
Of course, many parents are worrying that their kids might be addicted to playing games, and teachers feel obliged to do something to stop it. I can understant that the Game Brain theory looks to provide excellent help to those people, but there is no point in relying upon something without a ground.

It is not for scientific reasons but for discipline reasons, in the first place, that people think that they have to do something to stop the game addiction. If you think that your kids should not play games too much, just tell them not to do so. Don't seek the grounds for the discipline in science.

Now, I like to talk about another bizarre theory, related to water.
The theory claims that a beautiful water crystal grows when the water is told "Thank you", but does not when it is told "Fool". Water crystal is nothing but ice, therefore, the theory claims that nature of language influences on shape of ice. That is sheer nonsense, of course.
Water is just a non-living matter; It has neither ears to listen to language, eyes to read letters, nor a heart to feel meaning of language. No decent adults would believe it.

In fact, to my surprise, it is widely believed. Many seem to simply accept it as a good story when they are told " 'Thank you' is a good language that even water can feel".

Now, the problem is that this theory is being taught in classes as a part of moral education at a number of primary schools. It seems to be adopted as an excellent tool for teaching good language.
But, wait a moment. Are you sure about it?

I believe that such class lessons contain a lot of serious problems.

First of all, it is scientifically not true without doubt. You cannot teach such an absurdly unscientific story as if it were a fact even as a part of moral education, especially when people worry about a general trend of moving away from science and/or decline in academic standards.
But, what is more problematic is that those people are seeking a ground for good usage of language in a behavior of the non-living matter, i.e. water.

The usage of language has to be comtemplated by human beings because the language is a tool for communication among human beings. Just think about it; Is "Thank you" a good language under any circumstances? It is not difficult to understand its absurdity.

If the people who believe the Game Brain theory are seeking the ground for the discipline in science, here, people are looking for the moral ground in natural science. That is too much to expect from science.

You have to think about the discipline and the moral by yourself; Natural science cannot tell it for you.

Well, Nise Kagaku is accepted because it appears to be a science. That is, those who believe Nise Kagaku believe in it neither because they dislike science nor because they distrust science, but because they trust sciecne.
For example, the minus ion bussiness was booming because many people accepted the idea that "the plus is bad and the minus is good for health" as a "scientific knowledge". However, if you ask any scientist a question like "Is an ion with the negative charge good for health?", he/she will not give you a simple answer with yes or no. "There are various kinds of negative ions; Some may be good, but others may be bad for health. If it is good, it can be bad if you take it too much, bla bla bla · · · ". You may end up with a lengthy indecisive answer.

That is, in fact, scientific conscientiousness, that we cannot help.

In contrast with this, Nise Kagaku promises you: "the minus is always good, and the plus is always bad", "the addictive playing game is bad because it causes brain damage", " 'Thank you' is a good language because it lets water grow a beautiful crystal."

Nise Kagaku tells you what is right and what is wrong, immediately. You cannot expect such a simple quick answer from real science.

Well, perhaps the public image of science is more like this: "Science can give decisive answers for complicated problems without ambiguity". Such an image may be spreading. If it is true, perhaps Nise Kagaku appears to be more like science than real science for many people.
Life would be simple if you could answer yes or no to any questions. Actually, life isn't that simple, after all. We already have known that what is important is to think carefully about something not so simple. The rational thinking and/or the scientific thinking are the way to think such things properly. You are not really thinking when you seek a "yes or no answer".
Apart from Nise Kagaku, in these days, I am afraid that people tend to want a quick conclusion through a simple dichotomic way of thinking only to determine whether it is good or bad.

What we have to cherish is the process in the rational way of thinking  that leads to the conclusion.

1) "Nise Kagaku" ia a Japanese word that means "fake science".

2) Blood Type Personality Telling: A kind of personality typology superstition based on one's blood type: type A tidy, type B independent, type O determined, and type AB logical. Very popular in Japan and some are serious about it. Many company personnels look at one's blood type in recruiting and personnel allocating. There were even some discrimination cases, against the personality associated to their blood type.

3) Minus Ion: A untechnical term used as a generic name for a negatively charged atomic cluster floating in air. It has become to be believed good for health as a result of the successful marketing strategy by home appliance manufacturers in Japan. In spite of its popularity, there is no general agreement about what the "Minus Ion" really specifies. Shouldn't be confused with"negative ion", which is well-defined as a technical term.

4) Germanium: Believed to emit electrons above 32°C for unthinkable reasons, which has led to another superstition that the gernamium is good for health if you wear a bracelet, necklace, or anything made of the germanium whose purity above 99.9999%!
